It was a nice chill Sunday, I was playing some games with a friend online, and I decided to order some food because I didn't want to cook. I browsed Wolt (delivery app), saw the classic stores for like souvlaki and such but then I saw something interesting! A new Mexican place, not far from me either!
I opened the menu and it had an insanely nice plethora of Tacos and Quesadillas, so I decided to pick up one offer Wolt had for 3 veggie Quesadillas at -50% and 3 Tacos. The quesadillas had a lot of veggies, some chilli pepers and avocado, it was really yummy! The tacos on the other hand were called "Tacos De Pollo"
Tacos De Pollo, in this store meant, chopped chicken fillets, a nice cheese mix, pico de gallo and bbq sauce. Served with a dip of Sour Cream (my favorite!) or Sweet Chilli Mayo. When you select their tacos (and some quesadillas) there is a drop down below that asks for how much spicy do you want. Here's where things went horribly wrong.
For the quesadillas, I selected "strong", which they were, it was a nice spice, I think it was Tabasco or Aleppo pepper, but overall it was spicy enough to be pleasant and very tasty might I add. For the tacos... I thought I selected "strong" as well, so when I took a bite and didn't taste any spice at all, I thought all was good. I took a big bite.
Not even 10 seconds later, I started burning. BURNING. My mouth felt like an nuclear fission was on going, I started almost immediately crying. When I tell you that I RUN to the fridge to grab milk, I run like my life dependent on it. I thank heavens I didn't drink any milk when I bought it yesterday, I emptied that bottle like its nothing. For the next 30 minutes I was in severe pain, chugging milk every few minutes.
Now you may wonder "Okay Aurora, there is no way it was this bad", it was. And that was also my first thought, why did this "Strong" spice felt so bad. After calming down and the "WTF HAPPENED!" was over, I genuinely questioned why was this so spicy?!
Well I checked again the Wolt app, and I noticed, the spice was set to:
*drum roll*
MUERTE.
Translate this into English from Spanish and it literally means death. And I won't lie, that almost happened 🤣
The ingredients of this spice level? "Handmade salsa from Carolina Reaper and Ghost peppers"
CAROLINA REAPER??? WHAT.
To put it into perspective, the highest amount of spice I willingly had was Tabasco (and in big quantities) which is rated in about 25,000 - 50,000 Scoville Heat Units (click to learn about this scale).
A Ghost Pepper is at 750,000 - 1,500,000 Scoville.
A Caroline Reaper is at 1,500,000 - 2,500,000 Scoville.
Things went from 0 to 100 really freaking quickly dude.

I am not built for that level of spice yet. My stomach was upset for the next few hours, and eventually what comes in, comes out, in a rocket style... I think that's the only thing that saved me from severe pain later down the night and the day after, so I can't lie I am a bit thankful about that. I calmed down quickly after that, and was able to fall asleep later. Though the next day I woke up with a sever headache..
Well now you may wonder, how did this happen. I probably fat fingered the other option without realizing it, and honestly, minus all the pain I had for that 30-45 minutes, I don't mind it. I can say I've tried this kind of sauce at least once now 😂Ignoring the spice, the meat and other sauces on the taco was really good, for that 10 seconds I tasted it. I will definitely buy this again, but in "mild" spice now 🤣
I don't think I will ever do this again, I do want to climb the ladder of spice at some point in time, but not this fast lol.
At least the good thing out of this story is that I shared this experience with a group I fly around with in VTOLVR and they are thinking of giving me the nickname of "Muerte" which at first it sounds badass, but when you learn the story it loses all that weight 🤣Honestly, I love that.
That's it for this story, if you like this format, please let me know, I've had a lot of food related experiences, and writing about them sounds fun! See you later :)
